VISCERAL OSTEOPATHY

Visceral & Post Operative Osteopathy

Osteopathy is not just a method of treating back pain and sports injuries, it is a system of manual medicine.
David your osteopath uses a variety of techniques to help improve the physiological function of the internal structures and organs of the body. In this way Osteopathy practiced by David can be used to help a wide variety of conditions.

Osteopathy aims to improve the way your internal organs can gently move and how elastic the surrounding tissues are. He will also aim to make the spine, rib cage, and pelvis work more efficiently, especially in the case of any referred pain from these areas to the pelvic organs.

There are many Pelvic problems that may be helped with Osteopathy. These include:

Irritable bladder
Urethral spasms
Pain from pelvic scars and adhesions
Post childbirth problems. Visit the Pregnancy Page for further information
Coccygeal pain
Pelvic pain post trauma of surgery, e.g. Caesarian section, Gall bladder, Appendix etc
Renal colic

Some symptoms associated with gynecological conditions, such as mild prolapse, endometriosis and pelvic congestion.

ASTHMA, RESPIRATION

There are many Respiratory & Circulation problems that may be helped with Osteopathy. These include:

ASTHMA
Chronic Bronchitis
Pain in the chest following trauma such as; fractured ribs or seat belt injuries.
Post - Pleurisy pain syndromes
Chest pain after surgery
Recurrent upper respiratory tract problems, otitis media, sinusitis
Circulation
Post operative scarring & complications and less than optimal recovery from trauma
Hiatus Hernia pain obstructing breathing

There are many Digestive problems that may be helped with Osteopathy. These include:

Irritable bowel syndrome, IBS
Indigestion
Reflux

Respiratory - Breathing Problems

People suffering from breathing disorders often have many tensions and restrictions in their ribcage. Whether they suffer from asthma, chronic bronchitis, reduced breathing from old rib fractures, emphysema or some other chronic respiratory problem, osteopathy can help. This is achieved by improving the elasticity of the ribcage, easing muscle tension to reduce respiratory fatigue, and helping the person cope with their condition more readily. Breathing exercises, rib stretching and postural advice can be given which helps to maintain better respiratory function alongside treatment. It is not always possible to resolve the underlying condition which may be related to other diseases or allergies, for example, but a better quality of life can be achieved and sometimes a reliance on medication can be reduced. Osteopathic management with respiratory disorders may be done in conjunction with your G.P. or other healthcare professionals as appropriate.

RECOVERING FROM OPERATIONS

preg1-2
Post-operative Scarring
Many people are successfully treated by surgery, which improves their quality of life. However, even the most successful operations can leave painful scarring, adhesions, and general discomfort. Sometimes these factors resolve very quickly, but on occasions people can be left in considerable discomfort and pain for years. Repeated surgery is often not an option, and in some cases can only make the scarring worse. Osteopathy, using gentle soft tissue techniques, helping to improve the movement of the organs and muscles of the abdominal and pelvic regions can often release some of the tension associated with post-operative scarring, thus reducing symptoms.

Osteopathy is not like surgery, which cuts away the scar tissue and separates adhesions.
Adhesions come in several 'grades'; some are like Velcro, and so can slightly pull apart without further trauma, others are increasingly tough, and at their most severe are very thick and dense pieces of real living tissue complete with their own blood vessels and nerves. Hence these cannot be 'massaged away', instead the aim is to reduce their stiffness and contractures, trying to get them to 'pull less hard' on adjacent tissues and organs; to get these other organs and tissues to relax as much as possible / to be more elastic, so they are not as twisted by the adhesion as before. This usually means that the adhesion is better compensated for, organ function is improved, and fluid drainage is increased. This often means some overall reduction in symptoms although everyone responds differently. In some a few treatments works wonders, in others the progress is much slower or only short term. However, most people get some change after a few treatments. Maintenance may be required. Please discuss with David as your osteopath.

Treatment is aimed at improving movement and flexibility in the scars and surrounding tissues, and to help all other tissues and surrounding organs and muscles movement more 'normally' therefore accommodating the scar more readily, and thus becoming more comfortable and less painful over time. Osteopaths try to get the whole body and the local tissues to accommodate the scarring and inflammation more efficiently, thus reducing pain and suffering.
The gentle specific techniques are applied to reduce discomfort. Patients often find that treatment takes 2-3 sessions to begin to alter the pain / symptom pattern, and after 4-6 treatments patients often notice improvement in their overall problem and lifestyle. Some patients require more 'maintenance treatment' than others, and this can be discussed in detail during the treatment sessions. Everyone requires a slightly different type of management, and there is no 'set number of treatments per condition'.

DIGESTIVE DIFFICULTIES

Digestive Problems
Many people suffer routinely with such problems as irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion and reflux. Various medications help relieve the symptoms, but an osteopathic approach may also have something to offer. Easing tension in the abdominal muscles, releasing spasm in some of the intestinal muscles, and helping to improve circulation and nerve function may also help to reduce the symptoms and reliance upon medication.

Osteopathy with David can gently work on the following:
The diaphragm and chest muscles to help some cases of reflux, hernia or esophagitis
The spine and rib cage to improve nerve function to the stomach and intestines The abdominal muscles and organs, to improve transit of the food along the gut, to ease circulation and to reduce muscle spasm and cramping in the gut muscles
Osteopaths do not aim to replace standard medical treatment - surgery may still be required in some instances, but, it is often the case that surgery can be deferred following treatment, or that recovery may be aided following osteopathic treatment.
Because osteopaths use very gentle techniques they can be applied with days or weeks or surgery. If you have not had a medical diagnosis or any special tests done then your Osteopath will highlight the case that these are required, to help ensure osteopathic management is best directed.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What is involved?
Treatment is aimed at improving movement and flexibility in the abdomen and associated tissues, and does not aim to 'remove' the problem, like surgery does for crohn's disease, or to replace drug therapy such as antispasmodics or antacids. Osteopaths try to get the body and the tissues to function more normally, to be less inflamed, and not so reactive, thus reducing pain and suffering.

The gentle techniques are applied to minimise any discomfort. Patients often find that treatment takes 2-3 sessions to begin to alter the pain / symptom pattern, and after 4-6 treatments patients often notice improvement in their overall problem and lifestyle. Everyone requires a slightly different type of management, and there is no set number of treatments per condition. Some patients require more 'maintenance treatment' than others, and this can be discussed in detail during the treatment sessions.
